What Sets Them Apart
Every pre-1981 Beckett slab is a BVG, not a BGS — different scale, different holder, no subgrades. Buyers who know BGS by its subgrade row and assume the same of BVG are reading a different product.

The Slab
A holder cut for older, thinner stock rather than the modern BGS case. That is the actual reason BVG exists: a 1952 Topps card does not sit in a modern holder the way a 2021 Prizm does.

The Label

A blue Beckett flip carrying one overall grade and no subgrade row. Beckett dropped subgrades from BVG in 2005, arguing that on vintage cardboard a subgrade breakdown draws the eye to the single worst flaw rather than the card's overall merit.

Known Concerns
Mainly a recognition problem rather than a quality one. Buyers who know BGS often do not know that BVG is the same company's vintage designation, and searches for it land nowhere useful. The vintage scale is also not directly comparable to the modern one, so a BVG 8 and a BGS 8 are not describing the same thing.
