The subgrade specialist, and still the right call for high-end modern chrome — but its independence now sits with the company that owns both its biggest rivals.
What Sets Them Apart
Four subgrades on every card — centering, corners, edges, surface — which is why buyers use BGS to separate otherwise identical 9.5s. The Black Label requires a 10 overall and a 10 in all four, and the Black, Gold and Silver labels are collected in their own right. The system survived the Collectors Holdings acquisition unchanged.

One of only four graders covered by eBay's Authenticity Guarantee, alongside PSA, SGC and CGC. Cards in BGS holders selling at $200 or more qualify for eBay's authentication and buyer protection.
Auction houses
Accepted as standard inventory at Goldin, Heritage and PWCC, with Black Label examples routinely headlining modern-card lots.
Card shops and general resale
BGS cert numbers are searchable and its subgrades are widely quoted in listings, since buyers use them to distinguish otherwise identical 9.5s.
BGS is also the default destination for booklet cards, which PSA declines to holder — a small but real acceptance advantage in that niche.
Pricing
Four tiers, and the two cheapest have been paused since August. Base ($14.95, 75-plus business days) and Standard ($34.95, 45 days) are both sold out online, leaving Express at $79.95 for 15 business days and Priority at $124.95 for 5 as the only routes open — an effective entry price of $79.95, not the advertised $14.95. Beckett's service-update page says it expects to begin reopening Base and Standard on 15 September 2026, with availability managed on an ongoing basis thereafter; that page was last updated 5 August and describes the date as an estimate, and as of 9 September the tiers still show as sold out. Limited Base and Standard capacity is offered at select events, including the Dallas Card Show from 10 to 13 September. Autographs add $5 and oversized cards $8.
The Slab
The thickest holder in common use, roughly 7mm against PSA's 5mm, which buys real corner protection at the cost of shelf space and postage — a PSA-sized one-touch will not close around it.

The Label

Alone among the majors it prints all four subgrades on the front, so the grade can be argued with rather than simply accepted. Four 10s promotes the flip to the Black Label, which carries a premium of its own.

Known Concerns
The December 2025 sale put BGS, PSA and SGC under one owner, and collectors point to SGC's post-acquisition decline as reason to treat the independence assurances cautiously. Turnaround consistency and complaint handling were sore points before the sale. The Black Label premium holds so far; watch whether resources drift toward PSA the way they did at SGC. Since 9 September 2026 Beckett's entire website and app have been offline for infrastructure work with no restoration date given, which makes every other field on this scorecard — pricing, turnaround, cert lookup — currently unverifiable against the company's own site; treat this scorecard as last confirmed 9 September until the outage clears.

History
Beckett Grading Services launched in 1999 under Beckett Media, the publisher whose price guides had been the hobby's reference point for years — a credibility base PSA's eight-year head start couldn't match on paper. BGS differentiated on transparency: rather than one number, it published four subgrades for centering, corners, edges and surface alongside a composite, so a buyer could see exactly why a card graded the way it did.
That precision created its own prize. A Black Label — a BGS 10 with all four subgrades at a perfect 10 — became one of the hardest designations in the hobby, and for modern chrome it can still command more than a PSA 10.
In December 2025 Collectors Holdings agreed to acquire Beckett, placing BGS alongside PSA and SGC under one owner. Collectors said the brand would continue operating independently with no pricing changes.
