PSA's backlog is still falling, and it is falling more slowly each time it is measured.

The 6 October update puts the active grading backlog at 8.2 million units, down from 9 million on 22 September. Read on its own that is unremarkable progress. Read against the previous four updates it is the third biweekly update in a row where the rate dropped.
The rate, from PSA's own tracker
| Update | Backlog | Cleared in prior two weeks |
|---|---|---|
| 11 August | 11.85m | 0.55m |
| 25 August | 10.9m | 0.95m |
| 8 September | 9.9m | 1.0m |
| 22 September | 9.0m | 0.9m |
| 6 October | 8.2m | 0.8m |
One million, then 0.9, then 0.8. When we covered the 9 million figure on 23 September the point was the steadiness — three biweekly updates between 0.9 and 1 million. That steadiness is what has now started to give, and 0.8 million is the smallest reduction since 11 August.
Three points is not a trend, and two weeks is a short window. Submission volume, tier mix and the working days in a period all move this number, and PSA publishes none of them. What can be said is that the figure has gone down four times in a row and the amount it goes down by has gone down three times in a row.
What that does to the date
PSA paused its Value tiers on 2 June and said then that its projections anticipated five to six months to bring the backlog to its target of 5 million units — early November to early December.
From 8.2 million there are 3.2 million to go. At the latest biweekly rate of 0.8 million that is four more updates, or about eight weeks from 6 October, which lands near 1 December. At the mean of the last three biweekly updates, 0.85 million, it is marginally sooner. Our 23 September piece put the threshold at late November from 9 million; the same arithmetic on the newer, slower figure moves it into December. If the rate keeps easing, later again.
The wording has changed too
In June the trigger was a number. PSA's own pause announcement named 5 million units as the target that would bring Value back, and the tracker exists, in PSA's words, so collectors "can see the same numbers our management team sees and know when Value tiers will reopen".
The 6 October update does not mention 5 million. It says sustained progress "puts us on path to assess reopening additional service tiers in the coming months". Three things in that sentence are softer than they were: assess rather than reopen, additional service tiers rather than Value, and in the coming months rather than at a stated figure.
We are not reading intent into that, and PSA has not retracted the 5 million target anywhere we can find. But Standard already reopened on 14 September, so "additional service tiers" no longer necessarily means Value, and a collector watching the tracker for the number PSA originally pointed them at will not find it in the latest entry.
What it changes for a collector
Nothing you can act on today. Value and Value Bulk remain paused, Standard at $59.99 is the cheapest route open, and PSA's 22 September update confirmed new Standard orders queue behind Value and Bulk work already in the building.
If you are holding cards back for Value's return, the planning date has moved later rather than nearer, and it is now PSA's "coming months" rather than a published threshold.
Not yet known: whether the 5 million target still governs Value specifically, which tiers "additional service tiers" refers to, and whether the easing rate reflects fewer working days, a heavier tier mix or incoming volume. PSA publishes the backlog total and nothing underneath it.
